How to Choose Sustainable Vintage Furniture for Your Home

Sustainable furniture has become something of a marketing slogan — but buying vintage is one of the most genuinely sustainable choices you can make for your home, and it's been that way long before anyone started putting it on a Pinterest board.

Here's how to do it well:

Buy for longevity, not just looks. The most sustainable piece of furniture is one you'll still want in ten years. Before you buy anything vintage, ask yourself whether you love the bones of it — the shape, the scale, the material — not just how it looks in the listing photo.

Check the construction. Older furniture was frequently built to a standard that no longer exists in mass production today. Solid wood, dovetail joints, proper upholstery frames — these things matter. A well-made piece from the 1950s will outlast almost anything made today.

Don't be put off by cosmetic wear. A scratch or a tired finish is not a reason to walk away. These things can be fixed. What can't be fixed easily is poor construction or structural damage — so look past the surface and assess what's underneath.

Think about scale before you buy. Measure twice, buy once. A beautiful piece that doesn't fit the room — or overwhelms it — won't stay loved for long.

Ask about restoration. If a piece needs work, find out what's involved before you commit. A good restorer can transform something completely without losing its character. Reupholstering a chair in a fabric you love is one of the most satisfying things you can do for a room.

At Annämh Living, sustainability isn't a selling point — it's just how I've always thought about furniture. Every piece is sourced, assessed and restored with the intention that it'll be loved for another generation. Shop the current collection here.
